Our History & Journey
Located in the East Gippsland region of Victoria. The station is situated near the small town of Buchan at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, which is known for its limestone caves and natural beauty.

1800 - THE BEGINNING
A sheep and cattle station, established about 1837 by Edward Baylis, close to Mount Dawson, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, and to the modern town of Buchan, and the limestone Buchan Caves.
1999 - FOUNDATION OF BUCHAN STATION
Bryan and Vicki Hayden took the raines of ownership of Buchan Station in 1999 with a vision to establish a legacy of excellence in cattle breeding. The journey began with a commitment to quality and a passion for the land.
2001 - TRANSITIONS INTO ANGUS
Our decision to transition to a full Angus herd was made by sourcing cows and bulls from industry leading herds
2002 - INTRODUCTION OF GENETIC ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
We introduced a Artificial Insemination genetic enhancement program aimed at further elevating the quality and attributes of our Angus cattle. This marked a significant milestone in our pursuit of breeding excellence.
2019 - BLACK SUMMER DEVASTATION
The black fire Summer fires burnt through and destroyed over 80% of the property and fences. It was a devastating time for the community and big losses, but with support and help the area has rejuvenated.
2021 - EXPANSION OF GENETIC SOURCING
To enrich the genetic diversity of our herd, we expanded our sourcing efforts to encompass the highest quality genetics available globally, importing embryos from North America. This strategic move aimed at enhancing the overall quality and diversity of our Angus cattle.
This was the birth of our seedstock and stud operation.
2022 - SEED STOCK
Our first embryos were implanted into our commercial cattle, along with our first MOET & IVF embryo collections.
2024 - CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF STEWARDSHIP
We celebrated 25 years of stewardship at Buchan Station and unwavering commitment to the property and breeding exceptional Angus cattle. Our journey continued with a passion for excellence and a legacy of genetic advancement, along with the sale of our first stud sire.
2025 - VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Looking ahead, we are committed to pioneering new standards in Angus cattle breeding. Our vision encompasses sustainable practices, technological innovation, and continued focus on genetic excellence to help shape the future of Angus cattle breeding and the next generations.
