Bairnsdale Feature Weaner Sale
Bairnsdale feature weaner sale sees prices rival those hit in the mountains

A feature weaner sale held by the associated agents at Bairnsdale on Friday saw prices rival those hit at last week's Mountain Calf Sales.
Bill Wyndham & Co, Nutrien, and Elders agents yarded just over 2700 head of top-quality Hereford and Angus cattle, mostly weaner steers and heifers.
A good portion of the calves were sold by vendors from Gelantipy and Wulgulmerang, the next valley over from the vendors who offloaded cattle at Hinnomunjie, Omeo, Benambra and Ensay just 10 days ago.
Bill Wyndham & Co auctioneer Colin Jones said the yarding was as good, if not better, than some of those seen last week.
"The quality of the yarding was outstanding," he said.
"It was as good as up in the mountains last week."
The main buyers at the sale included those buying for clients in the Yea district such as Elders agent Jamie Quinlan.
There was local support and a small amount of South Gippsland demand, with farmers there still held up by mostly dry conditions.
Mr Jones said there were no major feedlot buyers present.
"There wasn't any northern support here today but the quotes have been similar to the prices up the hills," he said.
He said the quality of the yarding was a credit to the vendors.
Elders auctioneer Morgan Davies said the weaner sale was "very, very strong".
He said while Hereford steers may not have been as dear as they were at the Mountain Calf Sales, heifers were bang on the same prices.
Angus steers and heifers made similar money.
"It was hard to buy a good weaner heifer for under $800," he said.
Mr Davies said there were a few commission buyers present also.
He said Angus weaner steers made 400 cents a kilogram and beyond with similar Hereford stock back at 340-350c/kg.
Mr Jones felt the best Hereford steers sold dearer, up at 380c/kg.
Mr Davies said heifers made 330-340c/kg, in places.
Bryan and Vicki Hayden, Buchan Station, Buchan, sold 75 Angus, Milwillah blood, weaner steers including 21, 407kg, for $1610 or 395c/kg, 23, 373kg, for $1540 or 412c/kg, and 28, 338kg, for $1400 or 414c/kg.
